Summary · Week 1 · Introduction
Gospel of John — Why this book was written
John does not hide his purpose: these things are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20:31). The Gospel will show us that purpose through signs, through Jesus’ “I am” claims, and through the collision of light and darkness. We watch for the themes we named at the start — one God in three persons, the divinity and humanity of Christ, God’s sovereignty and our responsibility, belief that leads to life, glory, and abiding rather than a passing acknowledgement.
For reflection
John wrote so that readers would believe and have life. Are you reading this Gospel to gather information, or to come to the Son?
Which of the themes we listed do you most need to watch for in your own life as we walk through John?
